SMURF in Action – What’s Next for Our Region?
Hello Western Macedonia Model Forest community,
Following our successful integration into the SMURF project, here’s a snapshot of
the concrete actions we’re advancing with EU support:
1. Innovative Business Models: SMURF’s 2nd Cascade Call funds projects up to
€60,000 to test new revenue streams—think eco-tourism, non-timber forest products
(e.g., resins, herbs), or carbon farming. Imagine piloting a local PES scheme that
rewards landowners for biodiversity conservation!
2. Hands-On Training: Selected members can join Close-to-Nature Silviculture (CNS)
workshops across Europe, learning techniques to enhance forest resilience while
maintaining productivity. Demo stands will showcase these methods in our region 512.
3. National Working Groups: We’ll collaborate with Greek and EU peers to influence
policies supporting small forest holders—like simplifying regulations or securing fair
compensation for ecosystem services 11.
4. Carbon Projects: SMURF is developing a Pan-European carbon credit system.
Our participation could help Western Macedonia tap into this market, turning
sustainable management into income 7.
