Model Forest (WMMF)

The Western Macedonia Model Forest (WMMF) is a non-profit civil partnership focused on sustainable forest management and fostering social and environmental awareness. It brings together diverse stakeholders, including local communities, forest cooperatives, cultural associations, and public entities, to address regional challenges through collaborative governance. 

WMMF actively engages in events and initiatives to promote sustainability and community involvement. Notable activities include co-organizing in a conference on AI, with the theme “Artificial Intelligence, Environment, and Natural Disasters.”  on May 10th, 2025; organizing tree-planting events for International Day of Forests in collaboration with schools and research institutions; and joining the Kozani Mental Health Festival to showcase accessibility tools like the “Joelette” wheelchair. The 1st Forest Festival “FORESTIVAL” in 2024 highlighted forest products, forest therapy, and educational activities, while World Forest Day events held on March 2024, involved students in tree planting and environmental education. Additionally, WMMF celebrated the International Model Forest Network’s 30th anniversary by planting 100 trees in Kozani. 

WMMF’s vision emphasizes participatory decision-making, strengthening regional networks, and balancing ecological, economic, and cultural forest values. With over 90 members, including municipalities, cooperatives, and cultural clubs, WMMF exemplifies community-driven efforts for resilient forest ecosystems. 

Through its collaborative approach, WMMF aims to create a sustainable future for Western Macedonia’s forests and natural resources while reaching out to local communities and volunteers.
